Soil management to enhance bacterivore and fungivore nematode populations and their nitrogen mineralisation function

چکیده
We tested the hypotheses that management of the soil food web in the fall would enhance grazing on bacteria and fungi by microbivorous nematodes in the spring, consequently increasing N availability in cover-crop driven organic and low-input farming systems. The food web was manipulated by irrigating the dry soil of late summer and/or providing carbon sources. By creating conditions conducive for biological activity, we increased the abundance of bacterivore and fungivore nematodes in the fall and the following spring. Greater biological activity in the soil enhanced concentrations of mineral N available to the subsequent summer tomato crop. Mineral N concentration in the spring was associated with abundance of bacterivore nematodes, and with the corresponding Enrichment Index (EI) provided by nematode community analysis. Because environmental conditions that favour increase of bacterivore nematodes probably also favour other microbial grazers, including protozoa, the abundance of bacterivore nematodes may be an indicator of overall grazing activity and N mineralisation rates from soil fauna. Decomposition pathways in the spring, inferred from nematode bioindicators, were dominated by bacteria in plots that had been irrigated the previous fall while fungi were more prevalent in those that had not. The responses of omnivore and predator nematodes to our treatments were not consistent and there was no evidence that regulation of opportunist species by predators would be enhanced by the management practices imposed. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. Ecology of Nematodes Under Influence of Cucurbita spp. and Different Fertilizer Types.
In a field study conducted in Georgia, cucurbit plants with high (Cucurbita andreana) and low (Cucurbita maxima) concentrations of cucurbitacins were used in combination with two types of fertilizers to investigate their effects on the community of soil nematodes. Ecological measures of soil nematode community structure such as total nematode abundance, number of genera, trophic diversity, trop...

Three experiments were conducted to find out the feeding type and age structure of nematodes in different soil habitats; to know the efficiency of different extraction techniques of nematodes and to observe the hatching behavior of Meloidogyne juvenile in a Baermann device. Bacterivore, Omnivore, Predator, Fungivore and Plant Parasitic nematodes were recorded in the soil of flower, vegetable, m...

The percentage compositions of soil herbivorous, bacterivorous and fungivorous nematodes in forests, grasslands and scrubs in Romania was analysed. Percentages of nematode abundance, biomass and metabolic footprint methods were used to evaluate the patterns and relative size of herbivory, bacterial- and fungal-mediated channels in organic and mineral soil horizons. Patterns and magnitudes of he...
متن کاملInfluence of poultry litter applications on nematode communities in cotton agroecosystems.
The effects of the application of poultry litter at 0.0, 6.7, 13.4, and 20.1 tons/ha on population changes during the growing season on nematode communities were evaluated in two cotton production fields in North Carolina. Numbers of bactivorous nematodes increased at midseason in response to the rate at which litter was applied but decreased with increasing litter application rates at cotton h...
متن کاملGlobal change effects on plant-soil interactions
As plants of different life-forms generate different soil communities, assessment of climate change impacts on soil communities and soil services must consider how these impacts are conditioned by the vegetation above. We investigated how soil communities under different plant species in the same ecosystem respond to global change. In a heathland FACE-experiment, we modelled projected global ch...
